The dimensions of a Luton box van are remarkably similar from one model to the next. Variations in length, height, and width, among the 3.5-tonne range, are negligible with the only notable differences being in load volume and payload capacity.
The average external dimensions of a Luton van are length: 6746mm (265.59 inches), width: 2140mm (84.25 inches), and height: 3169mm (124.76 inches) with average internal measurements being length: 4082mm (160.7 inches), width: 2082mm (81.96 inches), and height: 2255mm (88.77 inches). The average wheelbase across the Luton range is 4126mm (162.44 inches) and load volume is a respectable 18.79m3 (663.56ft3).
If you’re buying, or just hiring a Luton van, you’ll most likely want to know which van from the Luton family will best suit your needs on the day.

Citroen Relay
There are actually 2 Luton variants from Citroen, the L3 and the L4. The L4 is larger and although its overall dimensions allow for a larger load volume, the extra weight of a bigger Luton body means it is less accommodating when it comes to payload capacity.

Ford Transit
The Ford Transit has been the “jewel in the crown” of the van world for decades and Ford has produced all sorts of wonderful variants based on the concept.
In fact, the Transit is so famous that it has become a brand within a brand. From the little Connect with dimensions akin to a rabbit hut, all the way up to the 3.5-tonne XLWB Mad Max high top custom Luton box model capable of accommodating a quality game of 5-a-side – with spectators.
Well, not really, but it’s amazing how you can really customise these vans to suit your needs if you had to.

Iveco Daily
I don’t know what it is about the Iveco Daily, you either love them or hate them. Personally, I’m with Tesco on this one and think they’re fabulous.
Tesco, btw, currently owns 4200 of these real-life Tonka Trucks which is, I suppose, a testament to their reliability and ruggedness. I mean, who really wants to hear the old “sorry we couldn’t delivery your groceries today, but our vans keep breaking down” chestnut?
It should be noted that the Iveco Luton isn’t as wide, or as high, internally, as its Ford counterpart and so suffers a chunky 3m3 loss to its load volume. Ouch.

Mercedes Sprinter
Here we go. As usual, Mercedes like to do it “their” way by offering not 1, not 2, but 3, different Luton vans to confuse everyone – and all with their own respective dimensions too. I suppose it’s logical to assume that they’re all aimed at different buyers with different requirements but even though, in the end, they’re all still, well, just Luton vans.
And the same Luton van at that. The three variants of this van refer only to the Luton box on which it carries. Here is the spec sheet for all 3 if you’re geeky like that. Click on the “view technical data” for the PDF file.
Payload (PL)
Anyhoo, the payload for the new Sprinter Luton doesn’t get any higher than 760kg so regardless of which box you choose, they’re all garbage (in my humble opinion) and incapable of moving any type of meaningful load without getting into trouble with the DVSA.
That aside, here are your 3 box options for the Mercedes Sprinter Luton van:
- JC Payne Box (PL: 741 kg)
- VFS Box (PL: 754 kg)
- PPS Commercials Box (PL: 760 kg)
The overall dimensions of each variant don’t differ by much either so if what you’re looking for simply has to be a Mercedes Luton van, then here is what you can expect.

Nissan NV400
The Nissan NV400 is a rebadged Renault Master, as is the Vauxhall Movano, so the van dimensions are identical between these 3 Luton workhorses.
Renault owns a huge chunk of Nissan so it makes perfect sense too to simply rebadge what is already a fantastic van rather than spending £billions designing and modelling a whole new concept. Even then, it probably still wouldn’t be as good as the original either so, why not?
The Nissan NV400 Luton, although rarer than its Renault equivalent, is just sexier though. It really does boast a “look at me, I’m cool” look about it.

Renault Master
The Renault Master Luton van and quite possibly my favourite van out of all on this list is, in my opinion, the best buy for a Luton van – period.
The payload is amazingly impressive when stacked against its rivals, the load volume is, without doubt, the best in its class if you choose the low loader option and it’s all bundled into a Luton van with dimensions no bigger than an average Sprinter.
So how did Renault get it right where Mercedes got it so woefully wrong? Who knows? But here is everything you need to know about the dimensions of a Renault Master Luton van.

Vauxhall Movano
It’s weird because I know the Vauxhall Movano is the same van as the Renault Master and the Nissan NV400, both of which I love, but in my mind, it’s still a Vauxhall and that doesn’t sit well with me.
They make great cars, but I don’t like seeing a Vauxhall badge on a van. And not for any particular reason either, I just don’t.
The dimensions of this Luton van are the same as the Renault and Nissan above so if you’ve already read those, you might as well skip ahead to the Volkwagen Crafter section.

Volkswagen Crafter
Lastly, but only because of the way the alphabet works, we have the Volkswagen Crafter.
You would assume that Volkswagen, being a top of the range manufacturer, would produce a top of the range van but this little 3.5-tonne cargo box isn’t nearly as impressive on paper as it is in prestige.
Price – not impressive. Payload – not impressive. Load volume – not impressive. Not bad, just not impressive either.
I’ve said it before, the Crafter is the little Luton that tried but other than its excellent build quality, all you’re really getting is a box on wheels that is outperformed in almost every way by its cheaper, yet just as reliable, rivals.
Still better than a Sprinter though.

Average Dimensions Of A Luton Van
The average dimensions of a Luton van are just that, an average, so it’s hardly an exact science.
That said, I’ve taken all the data above and squashed it down into something that’s neither here nor there, nor specific to anything, but will give you a general idea of what to expect if you’re ever to hire a Luton van and if you’ll feel comfortable driving such a chunky hunk.
Overall Average | Metric (mm) | Imperial (inch) |
---|---|---|
External Length | 6746 | 265.59 |
External Height | 3169 | 124.76 |
External Width | 2140 | 84.25 |

In Conclusion
This may well be one of the handiest articles I’ve written to date. If you are looking to hire, buy, or upgrade, to a Luton van, you’ll do well to know what you’ll be getting into.
The general dimensions of a Luton van make lifting and shifting so much easier than it is with a normal panel van. You get bags more load volume and everything is at a right angle so if you can play Tetris, you’ll enjoy working with this van.
That said, they’re a much chunkier bit of kit than smaller panel vans so parking, or reversing into tight spots, is rarely fun.
